Sumedang, West Java – Tension gripped Ciperdanta Hamlet, Jatisari Village, Tanjungsari District, Sumedang, on Friday (10/5/2024) afternoon. A young man recklessly climbed a BTS (Base Transceiver Station) tower without footwear or safety gear, sending shockwaves of panic among local residents.

The incident occurred at around 3:30 PM. Initially, residents mistook the young man for a PLN or provider technician conducting repairs. However, upon closer inspection, it became clear that he was just an ordinary young man without any protective measures.

“It happened around 3:30 PM. Someone saw a person climbing the tower. We thought it was a PLN or provider technician, but after getting closer, we realized it was just a regular young man without shoes or safety gear,” said Ismail, a local resident.

Upon receiving reports, a joint team of disaster volunteers, the Polsek (police station), Koramil (military post), and Satpol PP (Public Order Agency) immediately rushed to the scene. The joint team attempted to persuade the young man to descend carefully.

This tense drama unfolded for four hours. Finally, around 5:30 PM, the young man, wearing an orange jacket and mountain sandals, managed to climb down on his own. As he descended, a woman, believed to be his mother, was seen crying hysterically.

“He came down on his own around 5:30 PM. The young man has not been identified yet as he was immediately taken to the Tanjungsari Puskesmas (community health center). Meanwhile, according to initial information, the young man is from Karasak Village, Sukarapih Subdistrict,” said Agung Tirtayasa, a member of the Tanjungsari Satpol PP.

The motive behind the young man’s reckless act remains unclear. Officers are still conducting further investigations to determine the cause.
