HALLOSUMEDANG – Some time ago, I had the opportunity to visit one of the increasingly popular places in Sumedang, namely Kujang Sapasang Jatigede. Honestly, when I first heard this name, I was quite curious. Kujang itself has long been known as a traditional weapon typical of West Java, full of philosophy and history. But “sapasang”? That’s what made me even more interested to find out more.

When I arrived at the location, the first thing that caught my attention was the Kujang Sapasang statue standing proudly against the backdrop of the Jatigede Reservoir. This Kujang doesn’t stand alone, but there are two—a pair—hence the name “sapasang”. According to stories from the locals, this pair of kujang symbolizes the harmony between men and women, the balance of nature, and the close togetherness in Sundanese society. The philosophy is quite deep, isn’t it?

Interestingly, the location of the Kujang Sapasang statue was not only chosen for its strategic position but also for its symbolic meaning. Placed on the edge of the Jatigede Reservoir, this statue seems to oversee one of the major projects in Sumedang, the reservoir that was once controversial but is now starting to become a source of livelihood and tourism for the area. I could really feel the blend of traditional strength and modernization in this place. The Kujang, which symbolizes Sundanese culture, stands amidst one of the symbols of technological progress and development, the reservoir.

After enjoying the view of the statue up close, my friends and I took the time to explore the area around the Jatigede Reservoir. There are many interesting photo spots that combine the natural landscape with the vast backdrop of the reservoir. And I must admit, the beauty of the sunset here is truly mesmerizing. The orange sky reflecting on the surface of the reservoir water makes the atmosphere even more magical, especially with the silhouette of Kujang Sapasang towering in the distance.

Besides being a tourist spot, Kujang Sapasang is also a favorite place for visitors who want to hold community events or simply gather with family. When I was there, there happened to be a group of students doing outdoor learning activities. Seeing them, I was reminded of my school days when learning outside the classroom always felt more exciting. There’s a kind of closeness between humans and nature that I felt when I was in this place.

In addition to its visual and philosophical appeal, Kujang Sapasang Jatigede is also a great place for self-reflection. Many visitors come not only to take pictures or enjoy the scenery, but also to simply sit and contemplate. Maybe there’s something about the calmness of the reservoir water and the sturdiness of the kujang statue that makes people feel calm and peaceful. I felt the same way, as if this place provides a space to pause for a moment from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

However, I must also admit that the journey to this location is not always smooth. For those coming from outside the area, access to Jatigede Reservoir can sometimes be a bit challenging, especially if you’re not used to mountain routes. There are some sharp turns and uneven roads, so make sure your vehicle is in good condition before you go. But trust me, once you get there, all your efforts will be rewarded with the beauty and tranquility this place has to offer.

So, if you’re looking for a destination that not only offers beautiful scenery but is also rich in cultural and philosophical values, Kujang Sapasang Jatigede in Sumedang is a must-visit. This place is not just a new tourist icon, but also a reflection of the pride of the Sumedang people in their cultural heritage, as well as their acceptance of modernization that brings benefits to the surrounding environment.
