HALLOSUMEDANG – The Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) of Sumedang District is urging the community to be vigilant about the potential for high rainfall that could result in natural disasters.
Adang, Head of the Prevention and Preparedness Section of the BPBD of Sumedang District, explained that on February 5, they had requested weather data for the next 3 months from the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) of Sumedang District.
According to Adang, based on data from BMKG, Sumedang District has the potential to experience rainfall ranging from very high to moderate intensity until April.
“We hope that residents remain vigilant against moderate to heavy rainfall, especially those living in mountainous areas, hillsides, and along riverbanks, which are vulnerable to potential disasters,” said Adang to reporters on Friday, March 15, 2024.
Adang emphasized that adverse weather due to expected rainfall until April could cause hydrometeorological disasters such as strong winds, landslides, soil movement, and flash floods.
He also explained that Sumedang District is categorized as prone to natural disasters, especially during heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds.
“Several disasters have occurred recently in Sumedang District, such as earthquakes, landslides, floods, and tornadoes. Therefore, we continue to remind the public to increase vigilance to reduce disaster risks,” he said.
Adang added that based on BMKG data, high to moderate rainfall is expected to occur throughout Sumedang District.
Furthermore, BPBD Sumedang has also mapped areas prone to disasters and continues to conduct socialization and education for the community as part of disaster mitigation efforts.
“We urge residents living in disaster-prone areas such as mountains, hillsides, and along riverbanks to be alert if heavy rainfall persists. We also advise them to evacuate to safer locations,” he hoped.
